microscope
Laboratory magnification device
A microscope is an instrument that magnifies small objects for detailed observation.
The basic optical microscope uses lenses to enlarge specimens placed on a glass slide; electron microscopes achieve far greater magnification using beams of electrons.
Figuratively, to put something under the microscope is to examine it closely and critically.
