force

Mass times acceleration

Originally a noun, force has several synonyms that do nearly the same job in various contexts: strength, power, might, energy.

In more precise contexts such as physics, force is a measurable influence on a body or system that produces movement or another change.

If something is literally forced, force is applied to it in order to bring about a change: She forced the door open with a crowbar.

If you are forced to do something, you respond to an irresistible force, such as authority or persuasion.
