infrared
Beyond visible red
Infrared refers to electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible red light but shorter than microwaves, making it invisible to the human eye but detectable as heat.
Infrared technology appears in thermal imaging cameras, night vision devices, remote controls, and heat lamps.
As an adjective, it describes equipment or methods that use this radiation: infrared sensors detected movement in the dark.
The term comes from Latin infra (below), since its frequency falls below that of visible red light.
