pupil

Iris center opening

A pupil is a student, especially a young one receiving instruction from a teacher: The piano teacher's pupils gave a recital.

The word suggests a closer, more personal teaching relationship than student does.

Separately, the pupil is the dark circular opening in the center of the eye's iris that controls how much light enters.

The two words share a spelling but have different origins.
