atom
Nucleus plus electrons
An atom is the smallest unit of a chemical element, consisting of a nucleus surrounded by electrons.
For most of history, atoms were thought indivisible—the word comes from Greek for "uncuttable"—but physicists split them in the 20th century.
Figuratively, an atom is any tiny amount: not an atom of truth in it.
