optical zoom
Physical lens adjustment
Optical zoom uses the physical movement of lens elements to magnify an image, as opposed to digital zoom, which merely crops and enlarges existing pixels.
A camera with 3x optical zoom can bring a subject three times closer without sacrificing image quality: The optical zoom let me photograph the bird from across the yard.
The term distinguishes genuine magnification from software trickery.
