gauge
Tool for assessment
Gauge, sometimes spelled gage, is a noun and verb with meanings related to measurement.
A gauge is a device with an indicator and a range of values (pressure gauge, rain gauge).
Gauge can also indicate a particular standard (12- gauge shotgun, narrow gauge railway).
To gauge something is to get a measurement of it, or to estimate its intensity: He gauged interest by polling the group.
