size

Extent of something

Size, when uncountable, is a general, abstract noun for denoting physical or numerical magnitude: What do you think is the ideal class size? As a count noun, size is often used to denote one of a number of standard dimensions available for a product: They didn’t have the shirt in my size.

When suffixed to an adjective, -size is used to indicate one of a set of standard sizes, such as king-size.

The verb size means to assign a size to something.

To size up something is to evaluate it, often for a particular purpose: He sized up the crowd to gauge their receptiveness.

The noun size that denotes a gluey substance is separately derived.
