oil

Frying pan staple

Oil is a liquid or liquefiable substance that is not soluble in water and is usually combustible.

Oils are used as fuel (heating oil), or for nutrition (coconut oil, fish oil, vegetable oil), in which case they may also be classified as fats. In some contexts, oil is understood to be petroleum: oil spill, oil tanker.

As a verb, oil means to apply oil, usually for purposes of lubrication: You need to oil that door; it squeaks.

If you oil a pot or other cooking container, you add a small amount of oil to prevent sticking.
