rating

Grade on scale

A rating is an evaluation or ranking on a scale.

Movies receive ratings indicating age-appropriateness.

Credit ratings assess financial reliability.

TV ratings measure viewership.

A ship's rating historically classified its size and armament; a sailor's rating was their rank.

To give something a rating is to assign it a score: The restaurant has a five-star rating.

Ratings can also refer to harsh criticism: She gave him a real rating for being late.
