piston

Reciprocating engine part

A piston is a cylindrical component that moves back and forth inside a tube, transferring force in engines, pumps, and compressors.

In internal combustion engines, pistons convert the explosive force of burning fuel into the rotational motion that drives wheels.

The mechanic replaced a cracked piston.

Piston also describes a similar mechanism in brass instruments that changes pitch when depressed.
