Long for someone

Miss is two different words, usually easily distinguishable by context.

To miss is to fail or fail to experience in some way (miss the target, miss a phone call.

If you miss someone, either you weren’t available when a meeting was possible, or you are sad for their absence.

A miss is an instance of missing, a failure of some kind.
