acquaintance
Person you've met
An acquaintance is someone you know but who is not a friend.
If you make someone’s acquaintance, you meet them and get to know them slightly.
Acquaintance with an idea or subject is shallow knowledge: I don’t have enough acquaintance with genetics to judge the merits of her book.
There is no negative connotation with acquaintance as an introduction to a subject: The course is intended to acquaint students with the main branches of sociology.
