eddy

Water circling back

An eddy is a circular movement of water or air that runs counter to the main current, forming a small whirlpool or vortex: Leaves spun in the eddy near the riverbank.

The verb means to move in such a pattern: Smoke eddied around the chimney.

By extension, anything that swirls or circles back on itself eddies: Rumors eddied through the office. (Capitalized Eddy is a given name.)
