wire

Thin metal strand

Wire is a flexible strand of metal with various purposes: binding things, making fences, and carrying electrical current or digital information.

The wire is used informally for the finish line of a race, or a deadline or endpoint: The student finished the essay, but went down to the wire.

A wire is also a clandestine listening device, or a telegram.

To wire something, such as a message or money, to a destination is to send it there electronically.

To wire a device is to connect functional wires to it.

Wired is sometimes used to distinguish some devices that can also operate wirelessly, like headphones, computer mice, or microphones.
