caliper
Two-legged measuring tool
A caliper is a measuring instrument with two adjustable legs or jaws for determining thickness, diameter, or distance between surfaces.
Calipers come in various types—vernier, dial, digital—but all work by bracketing an object or span.
In medicine, calipers are leg braces that provide support.
The verb means to measure with calipers: She calipered the specimen to confirm its dimensions.
Also spelled calliper in British English.
