hole
Gap in something
A hole is a natural or created opening (hole in a sweater, hole through a mountain).
An excavation or cavity is also called a hole, like a watering hole or a hole you dig to plant something in.
Figuratively, hole may indicate an undesirable gap or lack (budget hole, hole in your heart).
An argument with holes in it is not convincing.
If you’re in the hole you’re in debt, in prison, or behind an opponent.
