fuel gauge
Dashboard level display
A fuel gauge is the dashboard indicator showing how much fuel remains in a vehicle's tank.
The needle or digital display moves between full and empty, with most drivers treating the low fuel warning as the signal to refill: The fuel gauge said we had a quarter tank left.
Figuratively, any measure of remaining capacity: My patience fuel gauge is running on empty.
