micrometer
Machinist's measuring tool
A micrometer is a unit of length equal to one millionth of a meter, also called a micron.
It measures things too small for the naked eye: bacteria, cells, wavelengths of light.
Separately, a micrometer is a precision measuring instrument with a calibrated screw, used to measure small distances or thicknesses with great accuracy: The machinist checked the shaft diameter with a micrometer.
