forecastle

Sailors' forward quarters

The forecastle is the forward part of a ship's upper deck, or the crew's living quarters located in the bow.

Pronounced "FOKE-sul" and often spelled fo'c'sle, it traditionally housed common sailors as distinct from officers.

The crew gathered on the forecastle to watch the approaching harbor.
