captain
Commands the ship
A captain is the person in command—of a ship, aircraft, or sports team.
In the military, captain is a specific rank: mid-level for army officers, senior for naval ones.
The verb means to lead or serve as captain: She captained the volleyball team to three championships.
By extension, any leader or prominent figure in a field: captains of industry. (Capitalized Captain is used as a title before a name.)
