bridge
Structure over water
A bridge is a structure that carries a road or path over water or some other obstacle or depression.
This connecting feature in the meaning of bridge gives rise to many other meanings that share an element of joining or spanning two things that would otherwise be separate: The halfway house serves a bridge between addiction and the return to society.
Bridge can also denote an anatomical feature, a dental appliance, or a passage in music, all of which form important connections.
As a verb, bridge means to connect: a grant that will bridge the gap in funding.
The name of the card game bridge is separately derived.
