paddlewheel

Rotating boat blade

A paddlewheel is a large wheel with boards or paddles around its rim, mounted on the side or stern of a boat.

As the wheel rotates, the paddles push against the water to propel the vessel forward.

Paddlewheel steamboats were once common on American rivers: The old paddlewheel churned up the Mississippi.

Also spelled paddle wheel.
