bulkhead

Vessel's internal divider

A bulkhead is a wall or partition inside a ship, aircraft, or vehicle that divides the interior into compartments.

In ships, bulkheads provide structural support and contain flooding if the hull is breached.

The term extends to any similar dividing wall: a bulkhead separating the cargo bay from the cabin.

In construction, a bulkhead may be a retaining wall or an exterior door covering basement stairs.
