mess
Disorder needing attention
A mess is an undesirable, disorderly situation (your room is a mess, she got into a mess with the police).
If you make a mess, your unskillful action has a bad result.
A different mess has to do with communal meals.
A mess hall or mess tent is where these happen; a mess kit has cooking and eating utensils.
If you mess something up, you make a mess of it.
If you mess with someone, you interfere with them in an unwelcome way.
If you mess around, you are either behaving in a silly way or are in an adulterous relationship.
