berth

Sleeping spot aboard

Berth originally meant sufficient space for a ship to maneuver, which led to its meaning of a place where a ship can dock or anchor: The ferry pulled into its berth.

From nautical use, berth extended to sleeping accommodations on ships and trains—a built-in bed or bunk.

More broadly, berth can mean any position or slot: She earned a berth on the Olympic team.

To give someone a wide berth is to keep your distance from them.
