hatch

Emerge from shell

Hatch has two main clusters of meaning.

One involves emerging from an egg—birds hatch, eggs hatch, schemes hatch when they finally come together: They hatched a plan to escape.

The other involves an opening or covering: a ship's hatch, an escape hatch, a hatchback car.

To hatch in drawing is to shade with fine parallel lines; crosshatching uses intersecting lines.
