paddle wheel

Steamboat's rotating blades

A paddle wheel is a large wheel with boards or paddles arranged around its rim, used to propel a boat through water.

As the wheel rotates, the paddles push against the water, driving the vessel forward.

Paddle wheels were mounted on the sides or stern of riverboats and steamships, especially on American rivers in the 19th century: a paddle wheel steamboat on the Mississippi.
