windlass
Crank-operated drum
A windlass is a mechanical device for hauling or lifting, consisting of a horizontal cylinder turned by a crank or motor around which rope or chain winds.
Windlasses raise anchors on boats, draw water from wells, or lift heavy loads.
The mechanism provides leverage to move weights that couldn't be lifted directly: They cranked the windlass to bring up the anchor.
