bunk

Camp sleeping shelf

Bunk has two unrelated origins.

One gives us the narrow bed built into a wall or stacked in tiers: bunk beds, ship's bunks, summer camp bunks.

To bunk is to sleep, especially in makeshift quarters: We bunked in the barn.

The other bunk means nonsense or empty talk, shortened from bunkum (itself from Buncombe County, North Carolina, whose congressman notoriously spoke just to impress constituents): That's a load of bunk.

To debunk is to expose such nonsense.
