A fantail is a fan-shaped tail or tail-like structure.
The word appears in several contexts: a breed of domestic pigeon with tail feathers that spread into a semicircle, small flycatcher birds of Australasia that fan their tails while foraging, and the overhanging stern of certain ships.
Anything with a spreading, radiating shape may be called a fantail: a fantail of cards, a fantail burner on a gas lamp.
