stem
Flower's vertical support
A stem is a long, thin part of a plant that connects the root to the leaves and flowers.
A similar part of other things that connects two ends is also called a stem – on a wine glass, a tobacco pipe, or the part of a word to which prefixes and suffixes may be added.
When one thing stems from another, the second thing results from the first in a natural way: Destructive weather events stem from climate change.
A different stem means to stop the flow, spread, or progress of something.
