taffrail
Ship's rear barrier
A taffrail is the rail around the stern of a ship, at the top of the transom.
It serves as both a safety barrier and a place for passengers to stand while watching the wake: She leaned against the taffrail, gazing at the receding harbor.
The term appears mainly in nautical contexts and maritime fiction.
