cut
Incision or reduction
The verb cut is frequent and has many meanings, all of which spring from its original and core definition: penetrate (and often separate) with a sharp-edged instrument.
From this you might expect that the most frequent subject of cut is knife, but figurative meanings have far overtaken the original.
Today, cut is most often used to mean reduce, as if by cutting: governments cut programs, companies cut prices.
The noun cut simply names an instance of what the verb does: Recent cuts resulted in the area losing its bus service. She fell and got a cut on her leg.
