Dark figure shape
A silhouette is the dark outline of something seen against a lighter background, with interior details obscured: The trees stood in silhouette against the sunset.
Originally referring to profile portraits cut from black paper, it now describes any shape defined by its outline rather than its features.
As a verb, to silhouette is to show as a dark shape: The figure was silhouetted in the doorway.
