byte

Digital storage unit

A byte is a unit of digital information, typically consisting of eight bits.

Bytes measure computer memory and file sizes: The document is only a few kilobytes.

Prefixes scale up: kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte.

The byte became standard because eight bits can represent 256 values—enough for all characters in basic text encoding.
