gorge

Deep rocky passage

A gorge is a deep, narrow valley with steep rocky walls, typically carved by a river over time: We hiked along the rim of the gorge.

The word also names the throat or gullet.

To gorge is to eat greedily until stuffed: We gorged ourselves on Thanksgiving dinner.

Something gorgeous was originally throat-adorning—a necklace or ruff—before it came to mean beautiful generally.
