carat
Diamond weight unit
A carat is a unit of weight for gemstones, equal to 200 milligrams.
The size and value of diamonds are measured in carats: a two-carat diamond.
Carat also measures the purity of gold, where 24 carats represents pure gold and lower numbers indicate alloys: 18-carat gold is 75% pure.
Also spelled karat, especially for gold in American English.
