ante
Chips before cards
Ante is a stake put up before the deal in poker—each player's contribution to the pot before seeing their cards.
By extension, to ante up or ante in is to pay one's share or contribute to a collective effort: Everyone anted up for the gift.
To raise or up the ante is to increase what's at stake: The lawsuit upped the ante considerably.
