Forward thrusting motion
A lunge is a sudden forward thrust or movement—with a weapon, a fist, or the whole body: He made a lunge for the knife.
In fencing, it's the basic attacking move.
In exercise, a lunge is a step forward with one leg bent deeply while the other extends behind.
The verb means to make such a movement: The dog lunged at the mailman.
