facet

Cut gem surface

A facet is one side or aspect of something with multiple parts.

The term comes from the flat polished surfaces of a cut gemstone, each angled to catch light differently.

By extension, any complex subject has facets: We need to consider every facet of the problem.

The facets of a compound eye are its individual visual units.
