stab

Puncture with blade

Stab is a verb and noun centered on the sudden piercing of something with a pointed object, typically a knife or blade.

A stabbing is usually a violent attack, but the word extends to any sharp, sudden motion or sensation: a stab of pain, a stab of guilt.

If you take a stab at something, you make an attempt at it without much preparation or confidence.

To stab someone in the back is to betray them, especially while pretending friendship.
