gully

Water-carved trench

A gully is a narrow channel or ravine carved by running water, larger than a ditch but smaller than a valley: Spring rains cut deep gullies into the hillside.

The word extends to any similar groove or channel.

In cricket, gully is a fielding position between point and slips.

As a verb, to gully is to erode channels into earth.
