fuse
Melts preventing overload
A fuse is a safety device containing a strip of metal that melts when too much current flows through it, breaking the circuit: The microwave blew a fuse.
To fuse is to join by melting together, or more broadly, to merge: The two styles fused into something new.
A fuse is also a cord or mechanism that ignites an explosive—if someone has a short fuse, they anger quickly.
The spellings fuse and fuze are both used for the explosive device, though fuze is preferred in military contexts.
