sideline

Remove from play

A sideline is the boundary line along the side of a playing field, and by extension, the area just outside it where coaches and substitutes wait.

To be on the sidelines is to watch rather than participate—literally at a game, or figuratively in any situation: He watched the debate from the sidelines.

To sideline someone is to remove them from action, often due to injury: A torn ACL sidelined her for the season.

A sideline is also a secondary activity or source of income: She sells jewelry as a sideline.
