pain

What hurts cause

Pain is the distress signal of your nervous system caused by intense or damaging inputs.

Other states of comfort that do not have a physical component are also called pain (psychic pain, pain of exile).

If you describe a person or experience as a pain, you mean that they are hard to endure.

To take pains is to be careful in doing something.

When something pains you, it causes you (usually emotional) distress.
