pattern

Discernible repeated form

Two general meanings of pattern are closely related.

A pattern may be either something created as a model or exemplar for imitation or implementation (dress pattern), or it may be something constituting the common element in observed phenomena (sleep pattern, weather pattern). Things perceived as having a natural order by the mind, sight, or hearing are referred to as patterns: migration pattern, growth pattern).

As a verb, pattern means to make according to a pattern, or to mark with a decorative pattern.
