raise
Bring children up
The verb raise is closely related to rise but unlike rise, raise is nearly always transitive.
The core meaning is elevate: The builders are raising the ceilings by one foot.
Raise is also used to talk about the activity of caring for something while it reaches maturity, as in raising children or raising cotton.
In North American English, a raise is an increase in pay; this is called a rise in British English.
In poker, a raise is the amount of an increase that a bettor makes.
