slice

Pie chart unit

To slice something is to cut it, with the result that a portion (often small or thin) is removed (slice cake, slice pie, slice salami).

A slice is an instance of doing this, or the resulting piece (slice of bacon).

In sports such as tennis or golf, to slice suggests a stroke that results in backspin on the ball.

A slice in these and other sports is the path of a ball as it curves in the direction of the side from which it was hit.
