bird

Winged egg-layer

Bird is the most general and ordinary term for creatures that have wings and feathers, that have beaks instead of teeth, that lay eggs, and that may fly.

Bird also has informal meanings with less obvious relationships to the feathered kind; it can designate a person (an odd bird), a young woman, an airplane, or a vulgar sign made with the middle finger.

Bird abounds in idioms and proverbs, most of which have something to do with the behavior of actual birds: birds of a feather flock together.

As a verb, bird means to look for and observe birds, as a hobby, or to hunt game birds.
